Africa is a developing country in many respects, and is making strides when it comes to digitalisation and technology. With a total population of over 11 million people, Benin has approximately 1.23 million active web users, with an inter-penetration rate that has increased by 11% compared to 2016.
The overwhelming majority of these users also actively use social media with approximately 1.10 million people, increasing by 90% compared to the previous year.
And in terms of favourite devices, Benin shows a strong inclination towards mobile technology: compared to 2016 active users on social media through smartphones grew by 117%.
In fact, as many as 79% of users prefer to use a smartphone, while only 19% connect via a desktop computer.
An increasing number of people in Benin are becoming interested in technology, although in relation to the total population the number is still low and highlights the gender discrepancy, given that the number of men is still greater than that of women.
This is demonstrated by the proportion of male Facebook profiles in Benin accounting for 73% compared to 27% for women.
