Growth of the mobile telephone in Zimbabwe

The growh of the mobile telephone in Zimbabwe is becoming increasingly important to the country’s
economy as a whole.

According to the latest data released by telephone companies in the first quarter of 2017, nearly $200
million in profits were generated between three operators.
The scenario changed after the Government’s acquisition of Telecel Zimbabwe and the 220 million
dollar national network expansion by NetOne.

The two public companies are struggling on the market against the listed Econet Wireless which has
approximately 50% of all users in Zimbabwe, whose total population is 12.7 million people.
In recent months, data traffic and initiatives such as mobile payments have increased the number of
users.

This data shows a positive development for a country such as Zimbabwe whose economy is steadily
declining, with an unemployment rate of 80% and with steadily growing inflation.
