The submarine cable for a trans-Pacific connectivity

The Hawaiki submarine cable system successfully landed in Pacific City, Oregon.

Hawaiki is a 15,000-km transpacific cable that will link Australia and New Zealand to the continental United States, as well as Hawaii and American Samoa, with options to expand to additional South Pacific islands.

This ambitious subsea cable was co-developed by New Zealand-based entrepreneurs Eion Edgar, Malcolm Dick and Remi Galasso, and once live will connect Australia, New Zealand and the US.

A great project to connect two continents

Remi Galasso, CEO of Hawaiki, exposed his point in these lines: “The coming months will see the realisation of our vision for Hawaiki, a system that will impact the capabilities and economies of hundreds of Pacific communities. Considering the scope of the project, the progress to date has been staggering. It is a thrill to reach the installation phase and know that we will soon be ready to light the system and deliver much needed capacity to the region.”

However the only Pacific Island connection shown on the company’s latest route map is to Tafuna in American Samoa. Connections to Fiji, Tonga and New Caledonia are shown as ‘stubs’

The company’s plan to connect to Fiji suffered a setback in December when the World Bank announced US$5.95 million loan funding to support the construction of a new cable to connect the Southern Cross Cable network to Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second most populated island.

The connection to American Samoa was announced in April 2016 with Galasso saying: “We believe Hawaiki is a unique opportunity for the Pacific Islands to have direct connectivity to a trans-Pacific submarine cable system” .

Also, parties associated with Australia’s Norfolk Island lobbied hard for the Australian government to fund the $A30m they said would be required to connect Hawaiki to the Island, but were unsuccessful.

This submarine cable represents a new beginning era for New Zealand and all the Pacific Islands: the global connectivity will benefit from this complex project.
